‘Disgyn yn dawel’ triptych 2023
Textile 15x15cm 22x22cm frame
Translation: ‘Softly we fall’
These works are an ode to Menna’s Mamgu, Ettie Beynon (1914-2006) who died in her garden, her favourite place.
Exploring early photographic process of cyanotype, exposing skeletal petals in the sunlight of her own garden, the artist has captured familiar forms in blueprint. Resist dyeing with onion and iron create pattern reminiscent of the domestic landscape of the allotment garden. Torn fragments of linen tablecloths and bedsheets are patch-worked in arrangements inspired by the work of Joseph Albers. Slow stitches serve to anchor the piece to its base cloth – the artist works intuitively without pinning, changing the thread colour every ten minutes.
The triptych marks three phases life – youth, motherhood, grandmotherhood, while each piece contains four equal parts – quiet continuity of seasonal change.
